Root Systems
Plant roots have several functions. First, they anchor the plants into the soil, keeping it sturdy and fixed in place. Second, roots act as the conduit for water, nutrients, and minerals, which the roots suck up from the soil or alternative growing medium.
Plants use a variety of root systems depending on the species. There are two common root systems, the taproot system and the fibrous root system. The taproot system starts with a single root, called a radicle, which grows downwards, embedding itself in the soil.
The radicle becomes a taproot, large and solid. The carrot is a good example, the carrot itself being the plant’s taproot. From the taproot grow secondary, smaller roots that head out into the soil in search of water and nutrients. The second root system, the fibrous system, uses a mass of roots of roughly equal size and spread out into the growing medium.
